Role Description: The clinical facilitator role involves three areas of responsibility; clinical education, the clinical learning experience and evaluation of the learning experience.

Clinical Education: The clinical facilitator will undertake activities designed to maximise the quality of nurses we expose to the hospitals; this approach will be done through an in-house orientation: Taking a student-centred approach, being patient and supportive of the learning curve Clearly and consistently communicating expectations. Drafting relevant unit objectives and specific expectations

Ensuring adequate personal orientation to the hospitals where you will be undertaking clinical accompaniment.

Teaching prospective staff members hospital standards, procedures and paperwork. Liaising and consulting regularly with clinical unit managers to facilitate effective integration of theory with practice and achievement of expected outcomes

The Clinical Learning Experience: To assist student learning in the clinical setting the facilitator responsibilities include: Liaising with hospital staff to provide opportunities for the nurses to meet the relevant unit objectives. Assisting nurses with their development of communication, problem solving, clinical and professional skills. Working alongside nurses as they demonstrate components of their practice. Having a sound knowledge of the private hospital competency standards and facilitating student development and understanding of these competencies in practice. Responding positively to the immediate concerns and needs of the nurses and the hospital if unforeseen problems arise during the clinical experience.

Directing nurses to the relevant School of Nursing unit coordinator if required Promoting the safety of both patients and nurses through the selection and negotiation of appropriate learning experiences. Demonstration of clinical expertise and professional role modelling.

Evaluation of the Clinical Experience: The clinical facilitator is responsible for the evaluation of the clinical experience by; Evaluating student performance consistent with the relevant unit objectives. Providing regular feedback, both formative and summative to nurses and the unit managers about the nurses’ performance. Seeking specific feedback from hospital staff relating to nurses’ clinical performance Documenting all relevant information regarding student assessment, incident reports or issues which related to the clinical placement. Providing feedback to the relevant unit manager regarding clinical experience.
