Job Description
Critical Areas Planner opening with Island County.
Employees in this position are responsible for compliance investigations and enforcement of Critical Areas requirements for development sites in Island County, in support of the Island County Clean Water Utility.
Employees in this position will review development approval documents and site plans, conduct site investigations, and evaluate whether development activities and sites are in compliance with the Critical Areas requirements of Island County Code. These activities will be concentrated in those drainage basins where water quality monitoring shows that established surface water standards are being exceeded.
The complexity of duties and responsibilities of the critical areas planner increases with position in this classification. Job is offered at three levels dependent upon qualifications.
Desired qualifications and knowledge include appropriate scientific background in the natural sciences related to critical areas, including the ability to perform wetland delineations, mitigation plans, biological assessments and other technical reports.
Knowledge of planning and zoning principles and practices, environmental and land use laws, specifically the Washington State Growth Management Act, Shoreline Act and State Environmental Policy Act.
Knowledge of wetlands, biological and physical processes related to terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments.
