Summary Description
The Director, Research will serve as the Campaign’s subject matter expert on key issues, envision, develop and disseminate relevant materials, and work with other Campaign staff to utilize research to promote the mission of the Campaign.
The Research Department conducts policy analysis, as well as secondary and primary research, to support the advocacy and communication efforts of the Campaign. The research focuses on the impact of tobacco use, policy changes to reduce tobacco use and the effectiveness of those policies, as well as tobacco industry practices and their effects. The results are used in the development and refining of Campaign strategies and tactics, as well as for media and policy advocacy.
Primary Duties
Conduct secondary research and develop in-depth knowledge and expertise on key tobacco control issues to support the communications and advocacy efforts of the Campaign.
Provide policy and scientific analysis to support to the Campaign’s Federal team and state-based advocates on various tobacco control policies and issues relevant to the advocacy efforts of the Campaign.
Prepare briefing papers, fact sheets, reports, presentations, written testimony, media materials etc. based on secondary research, both independently and in collaboration with other research staff. Primary areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, smoke free air policy, tobacco industry marketing, Federal actions related to tobacco and cessation policy.
Analyze proposed legislation and provide input to Campaign staff and advocates in states and localities.
Monitor and help prepare periodic reports and updates on campaign finance and industry political influence. This includes data collection and analysis, as well as preparing written materials.
Serve as a resource for information and analysis to Campaign staff, tobacco control advocates, policymakers, and the public.
Respond to inquiries from staff, partners, media, and the public for information.
Represent the Campaign at conferences, meetings, and on conference calls with partners and make presentations on a variety of tobacco control issues.
Additional Responsibilities
Perform other duties as directed by the Vice Presidents, Research.
Job Requirements
Requirements
Knowledge of research methods, including research study design and analysis. Ability to consume research, evaluate for rigor and applicability, and translate for tobacco control policy formulation and advocacy.
Ability to turn findings of research into useful products for policy makers, advocates and the media.
Strong quantitative and data analysis skills and ability to translate numbers for general consumption.
Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Advanced data analysis skills, particularly using Excel to manage and interpret large amounts of data.
Knowledge of the legislative and policy making environment.
Excellent research, writing and oral presentation skills.
Well-organized, disciplined and resourceful in conducting research; extreme attention to detail.
Established commitment to the issue of tobacco control.
Ability to work in collaboration with organizations outside the Campaign.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
Research experience in tobacco control, public health policy, or public health economics. Significant experience conducting secondary research and applying to the policy advocacy environment.
Seven (7) to Ten (10) years of experience in public policy, public health or related field.
Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.
