Addictions Counsellor (Residential Treatment)

Skill Requirements:
Education: Completion of high school, Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training, Completion of university
Credentials (certificates, licences, memberships, courses, etc.): Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate, First Aid Certificate
Experience: 2 years to less than 3 years
Work Setting: Residential treatment centre
Area of Counselling Specialization: Anger management, Anxiety/panic, Assertiveness training, Behaviour disorders, Bereavement, Conflict resolution, Childhood and adolescent issues, Depression, Family and marriage, Life transitions, Personal growth and self-development, Rehabilitation, Sexual abuse and trauma recovery, Stress management, Substance abuse, Crisis intervention, Compulsive gambling, Cross cultural issues
Type of Clients: Adults, Aboriginal groups, Culturally diverse groups, Homeless, Persons with mental health disabilities
Specific Skills: Interview clients, Assess clients' problems, Develop and implement counselling and intervention programs to assist clients in determining goals and means of attaining them, Counsel clients and provide psychotherapy, Evaluate clients' progress in resolving identified problems and movement towards defined objectives, Follow up results of counselling programs and clients' adjustment, Provide public education, Write reports (assessment, follow-up, progress, court reports, etc.), Identify additional/alternative services and provide referrals, Knowledge of 12 step philosophy, Liaise with communities, Facilitate groups, Teach life skills
Additional Skills: Perform administrative tasks, Use computer applications, Participate in fundraising activities
Security and Safety: Criminal record check, Child abuse registry check, Driving record check (abstract), Drug test
