A rare and exciting opportunity to work as a clerk for one of the city’s oldest and most prestigious livery companies - the Carpenters’ Company. Dating back to the 13th century with its own hall and offices in Throgmorton Avenue, it is rightly proud of its rich heritage of supporting the craft of carpentry, building skills, as well as its educational, philanthropic, and charitable activities on a significant scale. The Clerk is the company’s chief executive, responsible for and accountable to the court of the company for the conduct and management of the company’s affairs.

The Job Role: Leading the direction and administration of every aspect of the company’s activities. Providing continuity in its affairs; developing and delivering strategic, financial, operational, and people management initiatives. Supervising the company’s finance, investment, and property portfolios and charitable operations. Supporting the Master, Wardens, and Court of Assistants. Managing all aspects of the company’s committees, responsible for producing accurate minutes and other communications. Supporting the Master and Wardens is maintaining a vibrant and active membership of the Livery and Freedom, encouraging applications from diverse and talented individuals. Responsible for succession planning.

Overseeing the delivery of fellowship and hospitality activities in the Hall and abroad. Direct line management responsibility for a team of 13 staff in the corporate offices, including the principal of the Building Crafts College and the manager of Rustington Convalescent Home. Promoting the company’s interests with the City of London Corporation and other livery companies. Driving relations with external advisers.

The Candidate: Exceptional leader with charm, stature, and poise. Outstanding organizational, administrative, financial, and property management skills. Significant experience operating at the highest levels of responsibility in the Armed Services, the commercial, public, or voluntary sectors.

Highly developed diplomatic and social skills. Persuasive, unflappable, at ease, and effective in all arenas and at all levels. Loyal, discreet, and endowed with sound judgement. A respect for history & tradition yet able to initiate and facilitate change. Educated to degree level or equivalent.
