About the role: An exciting and unique opportunity to join Box Hill Institute as our Animal Facilities Technical Assistant! This position is a casual opportunity working across our Lilydale and Box Hill campuses on a rotating roster Monday-Sunday. The Technical Assistant-Animal Facilities will be responsible for providing care and supervision to our mammals, reptiles, and amphibians and organising veterinary examinations for any sick or injured animals within our care.
You will be maintaining a comprehensive inventory of all equipment and supplies, ensuring ease of identification of location, and ensuring all equipment and facilities are kept neat, clean, and tidy in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines. You will also have the opportunity to provide technical support to students and staff during their practice training.
The Technical Assistant-Animal Facilities is a member of the Science and Animal Studies team within the Faculty of Health, Disability, Community, and Animal Sciences. This position is responsible for working professionally with employees at all levels across the Box Hill Institute and liaising with relevant external stakeholders, including clients, students, industry representatives, and suppliers. The Faculty of Health, Disability, Community, and Animal Sciences provides a wide range of teaching and learning programs at local and international campuses. The faculty delivers nationally recognised training to over 3,000 students in courses ranging from certificates to diploma-level qualifications. Disciplinary areas include nursing, aged care, community services, children’s services, animal sciences, veterinary nursing, animal facilities studies, and laboratory science.
Please note that every 2-4 weeks you will be rostered for 3 hourly shifts on Saturday & Sunday. There is potential to pick up extra shifts if available. The salary for this position is in line with the PACCT 2 casual hourly rate of $31.30.
About You: Relevant qualification in an animal-related field (or working towards). Students currently enrolled in the Diploma of Animal Technology qualification are also encouraged to apply. Recent industry experience within an Animal facility with experience working with rodents and rabbits
Experience working with reptiles and amphibians would be advantageous. Experience caring for animals in an animal facility. Understanding of compliance and administrative requirements relevant to the regulatory areas, including WHS, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and Animal Ethics. Ability to support the set-up, conduct, and clean-up of practical animal teaching sessions and workshops. Cooperates and works well with others in the pursuit of team goals. Comfortable working with animals, in particular rats, mice, rabbits, Guineapigs, and reptiles.
