Position Title

Managing Editor, OpenCanada.org  (Fulltime, Permanent)

Position Summary

Work with the Editor-in-Chief and Production Editor to produce dynamic, multimedia content about international affairs for the Canadian International Council’s multiple award winning digital magazine, OpenCanada.org. This is a wide ranging job, siting at the intersection of journalism and international affairs research, based at one of Canada’s leading think tanks. This position brings a unique opportunity to shape the next phase of OpenCanada.org, including new media partnerships, new experiments in digital media, and international expansion.

Position Description

    Editorial strategy. Lead the development of our editorial strategy.
    Content Production. Help produce innovative interactive long-form content and essays on international affairs.
    Partnerships. Develop partnerships with international media outlets, think tanks, and academic research institutions.
    Relations with authors and academics. Oversee and build a wide network of Canadian and international contributors.
    Editing. Lead the editing of written content.
    Distribution. Assist in the promotion of content online and through live events and talks.

Qualifications

    3-5+ years as a journalist or researcher in the area of international affairs.
    Preferably a Masters degree in International Relations or a related field.
    Follow and have a deep interest in debates in international affairs and digital media.
    Willing to be based in Toronto.

Compensation Package

    Salary range C$40,000– $50,000 for 35 hour work week, based on experience.
    Group Health and Dental Benefits after  90 days

Brief Description of Company/Division

The CIC’s digital media platform, OpenCanada.org, is Canada’s hub for international affairs. OpenCanada.org produces a wide range of multimedia content – essays, articles, videos, live chats, infographics – featuring global thought leaders, academics, journalists and newsmakers. We distribute our content in partnership with the Globe and Mail, and are expanding our operations substantially. We cover and produce live international affairs events.

The Canadian International Council (CIC) is, in the broadest sense, an educational, not-for-profit charitable organization with a mission to provide interested Canadians with a non-partisan forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate of Canada's role in the world. This mandate is accomplished through our digital media platform, publications and programs related to Canadian foreign policy.
