The Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) region and the Department of Clinical Health Psychology in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Manitoba invite applications for a Contingent Geographic Full-Time Clinical Psychologist at the Assistant Professor level (position # 14931), to provide services to patients with complex emotional, mental health and adjustment needs often in combination with physical health issues, commencing July 1, 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Within PMH, the successful applicant will join a mental health program that collaborates through inter-disciplinary teams to serve individuals across their lifespan in both community and facility-based services. These programs have a full range of inter-disciplinary staff, including a number of Psychiatrists and Psychologists, who are very active in assessment, consultation, short-term treatment services and mental health promotion and prevention. The focus of this position will be primarily on seniors and their families and caregivers. The Psychologist will work collaboratively as a member of the team within the full scope of their professional practice and will be responsible for providing direct care, expert clinical assessment, recommendations and treatment as well as consultation service to the Centre for Geriatric Psychiatry (22 bed facility within Brandon Regional Health Centre), the community-based Mental Health Services for the Elderly and the facility-based Mental Health Resource Nurses that serve designated rural hospitals and care homes. The position will be based in Brandon, Manitoba and will provide services throughout the Prairie Mountain Health Region. Brandon is Manitoba’s second largest city (population 46,000) and is nestled along the Assiniboine River in the heart of southwestern Manitoba, 200 km west of Winnipeg, encompassing mountainous parkland, wide prairies and an urban trading centre. The combination of urban amenities and closeness to rural living contribute to Brandon’s satisfying quality of life. The Prairie Mountain Health region is growing in population and diversity. Many people immigrating to Canada are choosing to settle here. New Hutterian communities are being created and the Aboriginal population is growing. Delivery of health care is becoming more complex with increasing acuity in many settings. Position Responsibilities: Clinical psychology services to seniors, special needs patients in residential facilities, personal care homes and the community, including psychological and cognitive assessment Inter-professional rehabilitation and treatment planning. Consultation with multi-disciplinary staff regarding behavior management Clinical teaching of students in the health professions and continuing professional education of health professionals in facilities and in the community.
Applied clinical research and program evaluation.
Qualifications:
Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from a CPA accredited clinical psychology training programme and completion of a CPA accredited internship / residency. Eligibility for registration as a Psychologist (C. Psych) by the Psychological Association of Manitoba
Pass pre-employment criminal records checks. Excellent inter-personal and inter-professional communications and teamwork skills Education and experience geriatric psychology and clinical neuropsychology would be an asset. Training, experience, and/or research background and interests in Aboriginal health issues would be an asset. A vehicle and valid driver’s license are essential for this position, given the requirement for consultation in rural areas.
