Queensland Advocacy Incorporated is recruiting a lawyer to support the work of their Human Rights and Mental Health Legal Services. The role is 0.4 FTE (30 hours per fortnight), from 19/10/15 until 30/06/16. The lawyer will work with two existing lawyers and a paralegal to provide legal advice and limited assistance in relation to, among other things: Guardianship and administration, Restrictive practices, Mental health law, including involuntary treatment orders, forensic orders and electroconvulsive therapy. At times, the lawyer may be required to represent before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Mental Health Review Tribunal. The role is paid at QCSCAA Level 6.2 ($80,028 pro rata plus super).

Essential: Commitment to social justice principles including the promotion and protection of the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. Unrestricted Queensland practising certificate, or at least 2 years equivalent experience in a legal practice environment. Demonstrated skills in providing legal advice, verbal and written. Experience and understanding of working with clients in crisis, clients with decision making impairments and clients from diverse backgrounds. Highly developed organisational skills to identify priorities, manage a heavy workload, and maintain records within a resource-poor community based service. Demonstrated ability to work in a small team and to work independently. Computer competency.

Desirable: Knowledge of the Disability Services Act 2006, the Mental Health Act 2000, the Forensic Disability Act 2011, and/or the Guardianship and Administration Act 2000. Advocacy experience in courts or tribunals. Experience with coordinating and supervising junior staff or volunteers. Experience with CLSIS. Current driver’s licence
