I am a graduate student from SFU working on a project looking at the effects of spring frosts, humidity and attractants for an insect pest of apples.

Job Description

Looking for a research technician this spring/summer to help monitor orchards for insect pests (caterpillars in particular), rear insects and run temperature, humidity, and attractant experiments on the eye-spotted budmoth (Spilonota ocellana). Work will be conducted out of Keremeos and Summerland and various parts of the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys.

Qualifications

    Technical diploma or university degree in agriculture, biology, entomology, environmental science or related work experience.
    Experience with fieldwork, lab work, and data collection is an asset.
    Proficient with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and data entry.
    Valid drivers license.
    Transportation can be arranged, though a personal vehicle is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have a background or strong interest in organic agriculture, biology, or entomology. No experience required, though knowledge of scientific methods is an asset. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and a positive attitude are a must.

Additional Information

This opportunity is in the beautiful BC interior. Work takes place primarily on organic apple orchards and in the lab. A lot of time is spent rearing field-collected caterpillars on a diet of apple leaves.
